Pierre as a youngster in Cameroon.

Pierre as a youngster in Cameroon.

Our little organization, a registered nonprofit with New York State, is committed to providing educational resources to young children and elementary schools in Cameroon.

The guiding light behind AAO is Pierre Nzuah, who grew up in the village of Baligham in northwest Cameroon. Pierre comes from a family of 17 children supported by his father, a tailor and small scale coffee grower, and his mother, a vegetable grower.

From his earliest years, Pierre was determined to acquire an education. He worked to pay for his education through high school because there are no free public schools in Cameroon. His dream was to become an electrical engineer. There are no institutions in Cameroon that offer advanced science and technical training.

Against all odds, he made it to Canton, NY where he has been attending SUNY Canton. In May 2015, he will earn a four-year electrical engineering degree. He has also been accepted into Clarkson University’s Masters of Science program beginning in August.

With no money and no friends when he arrived in the United States, Pierre nonetheless achieved his goal and, along the way, through tutoring and participation in outreach organizations, helped many others achieve academic success. Everywhere he goes, Pierre makes friends.

Pierre graduates from SUNY Canton with a BS in electrical engineering.

His hard work and positive attitude are an inspiration—not only to persevere, but to be grateful for family, friends and all we have without being rich.

With limited resources during his college years, Pierre was unable to afford a trip home. Following his May graduation, Pierre, along with his core American “family,” will travel home to his village for the first time in over four years. He is determined to make a difference and help youngsters in his village get an education.

AGAINST ALL ODDS has been established to provide critical equipment and supplies to elementary schools in Pierre’s village—things like blackboards, desks and books—and to offer tuition scholarships to as many young children as possible.
